The European Securities and Markets Authority is planning to publish a summary of its 2014 supervisory work plan in relation to trade repositories. The European Union's various regulators, under ESMA's vague direction, are using trade repositories' transaction reports to look for trends in the market involving firms starting to trade in different kinds of financial instrument; the appearence of new risks or bubbles; and market data that can be gleaned from takeovers. Whereas the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive or MiFID covers only equity and debt (both the underlying securities and the derivatives that pertain to them), the European Market Infrastructure Regulation or EMIR, which came into force on 12 February, covers derivatives (and only derivatives) that pertain to all asset classes.
