The US zero-fees trading platform RobinHood is looking for a 'crypto compliance' leader to manage its day-to-day operations and be the Chief Compliance Officer (and AML Compliance Officer). His or her responsibilities will include regulatory compliance, regulatory reporting, written supervisory procedures, the smooth management of state regulatory 'exams' (visits) and the renewal of state licences.

The "Crypto Compliance Lead," as he or she will be called, will be part of the compliance organisation and be based in Menlo Park in California. His or her day-to-day duties will take in:

  • the firm's regulatory relationships, the monitoring of federal and state regulations, responses to inquiries and the submission of required reports;
  • the annual Robinhood Crypto Anti-Money-Laundering audit and remedies to the problems it uncovers;
  • participation on Robinhood's crypto-governance committees and compliance committees;
  • AML/KYC liaison with experts in the firm's parent company;
  • the management and monitoring of all complaints by customers, renewals of state licences, state regulatory visits and 'remediations' (i.e. putting things right at the behest of the regulators);
  • spotting inefficiencies in operational processes and remedying them; and
  • standard operating procedures.

RobinHood is insisting on:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Computer Science, or the Liberal Arts.
  • 8+ years of operational, risk, or compliance experience, ideally in finance or tech companies.
  • FINRA SIE, Series 7, and Series 63.
  • Familiarity with cryptocurrency operations and "consumer technology."
  • Experience managing projects interfacing with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A self-starter who can work on his or her own.
  • Resourcefulness.

Bonus points go to: an MBA or JD; a strong understanding of blockchain technology and mechanics; experience with crypto-currency, foreign exchange, or the securities market; and experience with retail customers. Absolutely no wage is mentioned in the job description on RobinHood's website.

In August the UK's Financial Conduct Authority authorised Robinhood International Ltd, a Robinhood subsidiary, to operate as a broker in London. Wander Rutgers is in charge of the office there. He worked at Plum and, before that, he led the product, compliance, and operations teams at TransferWise.
